Mayor’s City Builder Award – Ms. Sarah Dehler
Mayor Jim Watson and Kanata North Councillor Marianne Wilkinson today presented the Mayor’s City Builder Award to Ms. Sarah Dehler for her years of dedication to environmental protection and for her ability to educate and inspire residents, both young and old, about recycling, sustainability and many other environmental issues in the community.
Ms. Dehler is the Vice-President of the Briarbrook and Morgan’s Grant Community Association (BMGCA) and is involved in many community projects to raise awareness of non-native species, and to help remove invasive plants in the area. She inspires volunteers and regularly participates in the City’s Cleaning the Capital campaigns and helps inform people about recycling and litter management. She often attends community picnics and events to raise money and awareness for environmental causes and organized teams of volunteers to plant trees along Shirley’s Brook, spearheaded new community signs and organized plantings with funds from Trinity Developments Centre.
Ms. Dehler is known for her volunteer work and has been instrumental over the last five years in creating and maintaining the wonderful gardens at École élémentaire publique Kanata. She has motivated many local volunteers, raised money, produced grant applications, and found sponsors for many of the needed supplies and items for the school gardens. Ms. Dehler has demonstrated how to recycle newspapers to make compost baskets and is involved in projects that make science interesting for children. She has also been a volunteer with Canada Day in Kanata since 2009 where she has promoted and encouraged event greening with the goal of zero waste and zero carbon.
