Richard and Brian Cooper (The Cooper Brothers) receive Mayor’s City Builder Award

Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson and Kitchissippi Ward Councillor Jeff Leiper presented the Mayor’s City Builder Award to Richard and Brian Cooper (The Cooper Brothers) at City Council today, in recognition of their charity work and contributions to Ottawa’s music scene.

Formed in 1974, The Cooper Brothers were one of Ottawa’s best-known bands of the late 70s with their song, The Dream Never Dies, charting in Canada and the United States. Richard and Brian Cooper and The Cooper Brothers used their success to advance their charity work. In the mid 70s, The Cooper Brothers headlined their first of many fundraisers, performing at Lansdowne Park to raise funds for a new roof at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. This led to many more fundraising concerts and events. In 1984, they held a fundraising ball for cancer research and, in 1986, a charity concert at the Ottawa Civic Centre raised $45,000 to establish an Ottawa branch of the Children’s Wish Foundation.

The Cooper Brothers are involved in producing Ringside for Youth, a gala evening featuring local amateur boxers that raises funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, an important cause to the band that helped install recording studios at two clubhouses. The Cooper Brothers wrote the theme to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario’s annual telethon and performed at every telethon from 1983 to 1993. The band has also raised funds for the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre, the Ottawa Food Bank, the Ottawa Humane Society and numerous other charities.

The Mayor’s City Builder Award is a civic honour created to recognize an individual, group or organization that, through outstanding volunteerism or exemplary action, has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to making our city a better place today and for the future. This may include lifelong service, outstanding acts of kindness, inspiring charitable work, community building or other exemplary achievements.
