Photo submission project to be featured at Mayor’s Youth Summit

Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson and Councillor Mathieu Fleury will be joined by a representative from Children and Youth Friendly Ottawa (CAYFO) and other community partners to announce the launch of a photo submission project as part of the upcoming Mayor’s Youth Summit.

The event will also feature the unveiling of the Mayor’s Youth Summit campaign visual identity.

City opens sledge hockey-accessible arena in Stittsville

Ottawa – An official puck drop with Mayor Jim Watson, Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of the Community and Protective Services Committee, Stittsville Ward Councillor Shad Qadri and members of the local hockey community marked the grand opening today of Goulbourn Recreation Complex’s Arena B, which is a NHL-sized ice surface that was built to meet new provisions of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act for sledge hockey.

Mayor’s Remarks: Federation of Citizens Associations of Ottawa 25th Anniversary AGM

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. 

It’s my pleasure to be here today at the Federation of Citizens Associations of Ottawa annual general meeting to talk directly with individuals who are actively taking an interest in civic affairs. 

I would like to thank Graeme Roderick, President of the FCA, for having me. 

And I want to take a moment to offer you all a very special congratulations on this your 25th Anniversary AGM.

Twenty-five years of collective service to our community is an achievement that you should all be very proud to attain.

City officially names the James Bartleman Archives and Library Materials Centre

Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson officially named the James Bartleman Archives and Library Materials Centre at a commemorative naming ceremony today.

James Bartleman is a member of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, a recipient of the National Aboriginal Achievement Award, the Phi Delta Kappa Educator of the Year Award, and the Arthur Kroeger Award for Ethics in Public Affairs. After 35 years in Canada's Foreign Service, he served as Ontario's 27thLieutenant Governor. In 2011, Mr. Bartleman was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.

City employees honoured with Governor General’s Medal of Bravery

Ottawa – At Rideau Hall this morning, OC Transpo special constable Peter Nesbeth and Lindsy Richardson, formerly a special constable now with Ottawa Police Service, received the Governor General’s Medal of Bravery for their heroic actions to save an elderly man from a burning vehicle.

At the same ceremony, Ottawa Police Service Const. Karen Desaulniers, Const. Avery Flanagan and Const. Allen Percival also received the Medal of Bravery for their efforts to save the driver of a minivan that crashed into the Rideau Canal.

City provides emergency energy fund for low-income residents

Ottawa – A dip in temperature during the chilly winter months can have the opposite effect on utility bills causing them to rise to a level that adds financial strain to some of the City’s most vulnerable residents.

“The City has committed to providing funding to low-income households faced with the heavy burden of high energy bills,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “This investment will have a real and direct impact on the lives of some of our residents and their families.”

New fire station opens in City’s south end

Ottawa – The Barrhaven South community welcomed Fire Station 47 to the neighbourhood today with a grand opening celebration attended by Mayor Jim Watson, Councillors Mark Taylor, Jan Harder, Steve Desroches, and Scott Moffatt, Ottawa Fire Chief John deHooge, city staff and local residents.

 “This new fire station will mean faster emergency response times and greater peace of mind for the residents of this growing community,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “It will also help conserve energy and save money thanks to its sustainable design.”
