    Top chefs from across the country to stage legendary dinner in the shadow of Canada’s iconic Parliament Buildings

    Ottawa – The Ottawa 2017 Bureau and Mayor Jim Watson, in collaboration with lead partner CIBC, Restaurateur Stephen Beckta and Chef Mike Moffatt of Beckta, Play and Gezellig restaurants, along with Sheila Whyte of Thyme & Again Catering, are pleased to announce that tickets to Canada’s Table will go on sale at noon on Friday, February 17.

    This Ottawa 2017 Signature Event, under the Ignite 150 program, will feature all-Canadian products served to guests seated at a single, 1000-person, open-air table on Wellington Street.

    For this once-in-a-lifetime culinary experience, ten top local chefs will partner with ten top chefs from across Canada to stage a legendary four-course dinner with wine pairings.

    Canada’s Table will take place on August 27 beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are $175.00 which includes wine pairings (tax and ticket surcharges extra).

    As announced last month, Canada’s Table is a non-profit event, with many partners donating their time or resources. Proceeds raised from the event will be used to aid local and national food security causes.

    This is part of a four-day series of culinary events where celebrity chefs from across Canada will be featured in local restaurants. In addition, they will make a social contribution by sharing their skills with local charity organizations and by offering culinary demonstrations on how to prepare low-cost, healthy family meals using fresh local products.

  • Metric, The Sheepdogs, Bobby Bazini & Kevin Bazinet to perform at Stanley Cup 125th Anniversary Tribute Concert

    Tickets go on sale Thursday at noon

    Ottawa – The Ottawa 2017 Bureau, the National Hockey League, Live Nation Canada and the Ottawa Senators are pleased to announce that the Stanley Cup® 125th Anniversary Tribute Concert will feature musical performances by Metric, The Sheepdogs and bilingual artists Bobby Bazini and Kevin Bazinet, who will showcase their talent in both French and English. Liam Maguire, NHL historian, author and radio personality will host the event.

    This original concept show, an Ottawa 2017 Signature Event, will take place at Canadian Tire Centre on Friday, March 17, as part of the celebrations in the nation’s capital surrounding the anniversary of hockey’s most treasured trophy: the Stanley Cup.

    The show will include tales of Stanley Cup glory by living hockey legends, in addition to rare archival footage of some of hockey’s most historic moments. The Stanley Cup itself will be the guest of honour at this memorable multimedia experience for all ages.

    Stanley Cup 125th Tribute
    As announced last summer, the Stanley Cup® 125th Tribute will take place from March 15 to 18, 2017. This extraordinary four-day event will celebrate the integral role hockey has played in shaping our country’s identity and the longstanding love and admiration Canadians have for our national treasure, the Stanley Cup. It will be the signature event to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup® this year in Ottawa, where the tradition started.

    Gateway to the city decked out in festive pageantry

    Ottawa – The Ottawa 2017 Bureau and Mayor Jim Watson, in collaboration with lead partner CIBC, are pleased to welcome VIA Rail Canada as an Official Partner of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations in the nation’s capital.

    VIA Rail will provide train tickets for artists, contests and promotions, as well as collaborate with Ottawa 2017 on pageantry items at the Ottawa and Fallowfield stations. Other marketing initiatives include distributing Ottawa 2017 brochures in stations and lounges in the Quebec-Windsor corridor and on trains across the country.

    Additionally, the rail company will add the Ottawa 2017 logo and colourful look of the celebration to the exterior of the Glenfraser lounge car during special events like Red Bull Crashed Ice, the JUNO Awards, La Machine, and others. Visitors arriving by train during those events will be greeted by enhanced pageantry specific to the special event.

    Help roll out the red carpet with Ottawa Host 150

    Ottawa – The Ottawa 2017 Bureau and Mayor Jim Watson, in collaboration with lead partner CIBC, are pleased to launch Ottawa Host 150. The free online training tool, developed in collaboration with the hospitality programs from La Cité and Algonquin College, will help ready tourism industry staff, volunteers and residents to welcome the millions of visitors expected in the capital for Canada’s sesquicentennial celebrations.

    The new program is a light and fun way to learn more about the capital, Ottawa 2017 events and acquiring key customer service skills. It offers three different training modules: one for general residents, one specific to volunteers and one for frontline hospitality staff on how to exceed customer expectations.

    Each module takes about 20 minutes to complete. All those who go through the training will receive a certificate (and bragging rights!) that they are Ottawa Host 150 certified.

    To encourage as many residents as possible to follow this online training, Ottawa 2017 is partnering with Le Droit and the Ottawa Citizen on a promotional campaign with incentives and prizes. Details to come shortly on how everyone who has completed the training will be able to win great prizes.

  • Fire & Ice tickets go on sale today

    Ottawa 2017’s first Agri 150 event of the year to take place inside a rural greenhouse

    Ottawa – The Ottawa 2017 Bureau and Mayor Jim Watson, in collaboration with lead partner CIBC, are pleased to announce that tickets to Fire & Ice will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 19. This first Agri 150 experience will demonstrate an innovative way of showcasing Ottawa’s rural assets.

    The culinary adventure will take place on Saturday, February 11 – just prior to Valentine’s Day – at the SunTech GreenHouses near Manotick Village.

    Renowned chef Marc Lepine is creating the menu for this four-course gourmet experience, which highlights molecular cuisine. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a winter cocktail and outdoor fire and ice entertainment, followed by a small-plate fine dining meal inside the cozy ambiance of the tomato greenhouse.

    Tickets for Fire & Ice are $100*, or $125* with a wine pairings. A round-trip shuttle service, from one of three points of departure, can be added at cost of $12* per person. (* plus tax and service charges)

    On August 27, to celebrate our country’s 150th anniversary, Canada’s world-class food, wine and hospitality will be showcased at a single, 1000-person, open-air table on Wellington Street.

  • Ottawa 2017 ignites a year of sesquicentennial celebrations in the nation’s capital

    Ottawa – The Ottawa 2017 Bureau and Mayor Jim Watson, in collaboration with lead partner CIBC, are delighted to kick-off a full year of celebrations in the nation’s capital to mark Canada’s 150th birthday.

    Tonight’s New Year’s Eve celebrations at Ottawa City Hall launched 12 months of festivities with the lighting of the spectacular Ottawa 2017 Cauldron.

    Built in partnership with Enbridge Gas Distribution and natural gas companies from across Canada, the three-sided installation an artistic adaption of the Ottawa 2017 logo measuring approximately 5 metres high (16 feet) and 4 metres wide (13 feet) – is powered by natural gas. Enbridge has purchased an equivalent amount of renewable natural gas, a carbon-neutral fuel made from waste, in support of Canada’s sustainable energy future.

    The cauldron will remain lit for this long weekend and will be a landmark throughout the year that will be re-lit for special occasions.

    Earlier today, a First Nations sacred fire ceremony was held to kindle the flame that was shared from Ottawa City Hall to Parliament Hill. More than 400 youth, each carrying a torch, formed a human chain from the Ottawa 2017 Cauldron to Parliament Hill, lighting their torches one after the other until the entire line was aglow.

    In a nod to Ottawa’s and Canada’s past, as well as to our future generations, the flame from this Fire of Friendship Torch Relay was used to re-light the Centennial Flame, initiating celebrations on Parliament Hill and in cities across the country.

    History behind the Fire of Friendship:

    For the 1967 celebrations, the Centennial Flame was lit on Parliament Hill by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. As part of that ceremony, the mayors and reeves of each of the local municipalities lit torches from the flame on the Hill, which were then couriered back to all parts of the region where “Fires of Friendship” were lit.

  • Tim Hortons the Official Coffee of Ottawa 2017

    Ottawa – The Ottawa 2017 Bureau, in collaboration with lead partner CIBC, are proud to welcome Tim Hortons as the Official Coffee of Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations in the nation’s capital.

    The iconic Canadian restaurant chain will serve complimentary coffee and hot chocolate at several Ottawa 2017 events including the December 31st New Year’s Eve Celebration, the Stanley Cup 125th Anniversary Tribute Weekend and Picnic on the Bridge. In addition to warming the hearts of event-goers, Tim Hortons’ popular brew will also be served to Ottawa 2017 volunteers. As well, Tim Hortons will provide financial and marketing support to Ottawa 2017, with digital menu boards in restaurants across the country promoting the celebrations.

    Ottawa students send postcards to friends and family across the country inviting them to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in the nation’s capital

    Ottawa – Ottawa area students have a message for their family and friends from coast to coast to coast: “Come celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary with us in 2017!”

    As part of a city-wide student postcard writing initiative, the Ottawa 2017 Bureau and Mayor Jim Watson, in collaboration with lead partner CIBC, are pleased to welcome Canada Post and the Canada Post Community Foundation as programming partners for Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations in the nation’s capital.

    In collaboration with Ottawa 2017, Canada Post has printed and delivered more than 45,000 postcards to Ottawa’s four local school boards: the Conseil des écoles publiques de l’est de l’Ontario, the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est, the Ottawa Carleton District School Board and the Ottawa Catholic School Board. A grant from the Canada Post Community Foundation will support mailing costs.

    Students from Grade 3 to 6, inclusively, will be receiving the postcards this month and, as an in-class project, they will be writing personalized messages inviting relatives and friends living elsewhere in Canada to take part in the celebrations in Ottawa next year.

    The postcards were designed by area students for the Ottawa 2017 Postcard Design Contest.

    Capitalizing on Ottawa’s year-long celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday

    OTTAWA, October 25, 2016—Ottawa Tourism lauds the decision by Lonely Planet, announced today, to name Canada as the #1 country to visit in 2017. As Canada celebrates its 150th birthday next year, Ottawa is the only city to plan a full year’s worth of celebrations. Under the direction of Mayor Jim Watson and with the leadership of Guy Laflamme and his team at the Ottawa 2017 Bureau, Ottawa will be THE place to be in Canada in 2017.

    “Ottawa Tourism has been working closely with Mayor Watson and the Ottawa 2017 bureau throughout the planning process for next year’s celebration,” says Michael Crockatt, President and CEO of Ottawa Tourism. “Our team has been promoting Ottawa 2017 for quite some time now, in our leisure marketing, convention sales, travel trade, travel media relations and social media efforts. The Lonely Planet announcement provides yet another boost to the worldwide awareness of what is planned.”

    • the lighting of an Ottawa 2017 cauldron at Ottawa City Hall to kick off a family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration that will extend to Parliament Hill on December 31, 2016;
    • the world championship Red Bull Crashed Ice event in March;
    • a series of 17 epic stunts and gatherings throughout the capital called Ignite 150 that will take place throughout the year and include a yoga session on a barge floating down a local waterway accompanied by a live orchestra, a movie on a downtown terrace rooftop, Sky Lounge, a gourmet experience 150 feet in the air, and more;
    • the Juno Awards (celebrating the best in the Canadian music industry) March 27-April 2, 2017;
    • a summer-long free underground multimedia experience in a future light rail transit tunnel downtown;
    • a series of 20 unique one-day outdoor events called Agri 150 taking place over the course of the year in rural Ottawa;
    • Inspiration Village, a free display using shipping containers in the ByWard Market neighbourhood from May 20 to September 4 to highlight each of Canada’s provinces and territories;
    • the first-ever Interprovincial Picnic on the Bridge offering picnic spots overlooking Parliament Hill and the Ottawa River on July 2;
    • the North American premiere of La Machine’s roving, larger-than-life mechanical spider and dragon roaming Ottawa streets July 26-30, 2017;
    • the Grey Cup championship football game in November; among other reasons to visit Ottawa in 2017.
